From a networking perspective, the Internet of Things (IoT) relies on interconnected uniquely addressable heterogeneous electronic devices for producing information and building a worldwide network of real physical objects. In this context, the IoT presents a technology that enables loosely coupled decentralized systems to cooperate smart objects of autonomous physical-digital devices, augmented with sensing/actuating, processing, and networking capabilities. On the other hand, the coupling between the IoT and the Big Data has become an essential component for extracting value from collected data. Big Data is one of the most important recent research challenges with a paradigm that relies on the collection of tremendous amount of data to support innovation in the upcoming decades. A dataset is considered as Big Data when it meets the four Vs requirements, namely, Volume, Variety, Velocity, and Value. The keystone of Big Data exploitation is to leverage the existing datasets to create new information and predict future happenings and to enrich the decision value chain. Accordingly, as the IoT continuously collects data about the surrounding living environments, it is considered as a prototypical example of Big Data and a great application area of Big Data Analytics.

This talk will highlight and address the advances, applications, and challenges associated with the concepts of IoT and Big Data.

Dr. Nashwa El-Bendary received her Ph.D. degree in 2008 in Information Technology from the Faculty of Computers and Information, Cairo University, Egypt. Currently, Dr. El-Bendary is an associate professor at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Cairo - Egypt. She is the vice dean for graduate studies and research, College of Computing and Information Technology and the chair of China-Arab Technology Transfer Center (CATTC), AASTMT (Smart Village). Dr. El-Bendary has more than 70 scientific research publications published in prestigious journals, peer-reviewed international conference along with book chapters published in books of reputed publishers. In 2014, Dr. El-Bendary has been awarded The UNESCO - ALECSO Award for ‎creativity and technical innovation for young researchers in the Arab World. Also, in 2015 she has been awarded The L’Oréal-UNESCO "For Women in Science" Levant & Egypt fellowship.

Dr. El-Bendary’s main research interests are in the areas of Smart Systems, Intelligent Environmental Monitoring, Image Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Wireless Sensor Networks. She currently co-advises master and Ph.D. students as well as leading and supervising various graduation projects. Dr. El-Bendary co-organized and co-chaired a number of special sessions and workshops under the framework of distinguished international conferences as well as being invited as a speaker to several workshops and international conferences. Also, Dr. Nashwa acted as an arbitrator for a number of international conferences and scientific journals.
