Abstract:

The European population structure is changing as a consequence of a double demographic trend: on one hand fewer babies are born and on the other hand people are living longer. The result is "population" ageing" which is unprecedented in recent history and brings significant socio-economic challenges. This situation can also be seen from a perspective where, by the use of innovative technological approaches, we can see this demographic change as positive opportunity for the European economy. In this talk several development areas will be covered giving a special attention to the roles of ICT and electronics and their innovation potential under the contexts of enhanced activity, enhanced mobility, improved quality of life, health and well-being support.

Bio:

Luis Coelho holds a degree in Electronics Engineering and a PhD in Signal Theory and Communications. He has been widely involved, with both public and private organizations, in projects in the areas of computer science and signal processing, mainly focused on the healthcare sector. His research interests cover a wide range of topics but are often related with machine learning for image and signal processing. In the last few years he has around 30 publications in conferences and journals. He is also a teacher at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto and coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering Degree which creates a strong motivation for the development of new and innovative teaching/learning paradigms such as MOOCs.
