Workshop on Monitoring PhD Student Progress

PhD Programme on Information and Communications Technology (Doc_TIC)

University of Vigo

Date: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

This is a one-day workshop for the PhD students to show their ongoing doctoral work.

There will three  Evaluation Committees:

Committee no 1

  • Antonio Pena Giménez
  • Cristina López Bravo
  • Manuel Caeiro Rodríguez

Committee no 2

  • Carlos Mosquera Nartallo
  • Edita de Lorenzo Rodríguez
  • Manuel Fernández Veiga

Committe no3

  • Pedro S. Rodríguez Hernández
  • Inés García-Tuñón Blanca
  • Manuel Ramos Cabrer

Workshop Organization:

Two types of activities will take place:

  1. A lecture by a renowned researcher in a research topic of interest of Doc_TIC.
  2. Presentation of the on-going thesis work by the students.

The working language is English.

This activity is compulsory for all the enrolled students in the PhD programme. They have to prepare and present a poster about their ongoing research plan. Feedback by the attendees and members of the committees will be given.

Lecture Topic

Power Amplifier Design Challenges for Present and Future Communications

 Lecture Abstract

In all wireless communication systems a critical component determining the performance of the system is the power amplifier (PA) of the transmitter.  The PA is the key component boosting the signal strength before transmission, limitations in its performance will influence, for example, the ability of the transmitter to meet linearity specification for a given output power requirement and/or the amount DC power demanded.   This problem has been exacerbated in each iteration of the mobile communications specification (2G to 3G), as the increased data rate per channel required produces signals with higher bandwidth and larger peak to average power ratios.  This is particularly a problem in the base station transmitter because it operates at a high transmit power and must handle, simultaneously, multiple channels.   To date, complex PA architectures have been developed and successfully implemented to address this design challenge.  However, the emerging 4G and future 5G standards are requiring increased modulation bandwidths plus the need to operate over multiple bands as well as multiple channels.  The further innovation in PA design and architectures required to meet this challenge will be discussed in this presentation.

Biography

Paul J Tasker obtained a BSc degree in Physics and Electronics in 1979 and a PhD from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1983, both at Leeds University.  From 1984-1990 he worked as a Senior Research Associate at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA, with Professor Lester Eastman, involved in the early development of HFET transistors.  From 1990-1995 he was project manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) in Freiburg, Germany, responsible for the development of millimeter wave MMICs.  He joined the Cardiff School of Engineering at Cardiff University as Chair Professor in the summer of 1995.  While at Cardiff, he has established the Cardiff University and the Centre for High Frequency Engineering.  Paul Tasker has expertise in the area of fabrication, design and characterisation of high frequency (microwave and millimeter wave) compound semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices and circuits. He has developed a number of microwave and millimeter wave, s-parameters, noise parameters and non-linear parameter, measurement systems along with the associated analysis and extraction techniques for characterising transistors and developing CAD models. As a consequence of this work, he has contributed to over 100 technical papers and publications including two book chapters.  He has acted as a consultant to various major USA industries, GE, MSC, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Alpha, Martin Marietta, Siemens, NESI, EG&G Princeton Applied Research and Hewlett Packard. He is Fellow IEEE and IET, and has been appointed as an IEEE Distinguished Microwave Lecturer for the term of 2008-2010.
