 Lecture topic  

 Random Forests for unsupervised Pattern Recognition 

 Lecture summary                  Random Forests (RFs) represent a well known data description tool for Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning. After being introduced by L. Breiman in the early 2000s, these methods have been largely and successfully applied in many different fields, like computer vision, biometrics, bioinformatics, network security, remote sensing and many others. Random Forests are mainly designed to face supervised tasks like classification and regression; however, in recent years, there has been an increased interest in investigating their exploitation also in unsupervised scenarios like density estimation, clustering, anomaly detection, manifold learning and others.
This talk is aimed at introducing the Random Forest approach and its exploitation in unsupervised Pattern Recognition scenarios. In particular, the talk will first introduce the basic RF methodology, starting from its building block, the Decision Tree. After presenting the classic training procedures for supervised scenarios, the talk will introduce some advanced and alternative Random Forests methods for unsupervised tasks (like clustering and anomaly detection).
 Short Bio  Manuele Bicego received his Laurea (MS) degree and PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Verona (Italy) in 1999 and 2003, respectively. After being with the University of Sassari (Italy) from 2004 to 2008, he joined the Computer Science Dept. of the University of Verona (Italy), where he is now an associate professor. From June 2009 to February 2011 he was also team leader at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT – Genova, Italy).
The research of Manuele Bicego is mainly focused on statistical pattern recognition, and deals with different methodological issues (like clustering, biclustering, probabilistic models and Random Forests) and applications (like seismic signal analysis, bioinformatics and medical data analysis). He is author of more than 150 papers on the above subjects, published in international journals, edited books and conferences. He actively participated to different private, national and EU-funded research projects; he had/has well established national and international collaborations with several research centres, collaborations supported by many (even long-term) visit exchanges.
Since 2016 he is an associate editor of Pattern Recognition; he was/is member of the Scientific/Program/Technical/Reviewing Committee of many different international conferences and workshops related to his research interests; he also regularly serves as a reviewer for more than 35 international journals. Finally, he is member of the TC-1 technical committee (TC-1: Statistical Pattern Recognition Techniques, since 2017) and of the TC-20 technical committee (TC-20 Pattern Recognition for Bioinformatics, since 2013) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

Procedure for the Evaluation of the RESEARCH PLAN or ANNUAL DEFENCE

 

PhD Program on Information and Communications Technology of the University of Vigo

Academic year 2021-22

Approved by the Academic Committee (CAPD) on May 5, 2022

 

General Considerations:

  1. This activity is compulsory for all the students enrolled in the academic year.
  2. The working language is English.
  3. A rubric for evaluation is approved by the Academic Committee of the PhD program (CAPD). This rubric will be used for all students. Nevertheless, evaluation committees will take into consideration the actual dedication of the students: Full- time students, Part-time students, etc. This rubric is in Annex 1.
  4. This rubric will be completed by the Evaluation Committee, and by the advisor(s) of the thesis. In case of more than one advisor, all advisors must agree on a single rubric.
  5. The Evaluation Committee will propose a Score to the Academic Committee of the PhD Program. CAPD will be in charge of delivering the final score.
  6. Each student will be assigned to one of the evaluation committees. This assignment is made by the CAPD.
  7. There will be three Evaluation Committees:

Evaluation procedure and calendar:

  1. All students must prepare a poster. The pdf file of the poster must be uploaded to the Moovi server by 14:00 (CET) of May 30, 2022, Monday. Your file should be named as Poster_2022_Name_FamilyNames.pdf. DocTIC will be in charge of the printing of the poster for those students who will attend the session.
  2. Those students unable to attend the workshop will let the DocTIC coordinator know by answering the corresponding survey in Moovi by May 30, 2022, Monday, explaining the reason for his/her absence. Upon acceptance, one member of the corresponding evaluation committee will contact the student in order to set up an appointment for on-line evaluation. The students will receive the instructions about how the evaluation will be conducted. These students do not have to send the slide.
  3. The advisors must upload one rubric by May 30, 2022, Monday to the Moovi server. A positive evaluation by the advisor is required to continue the evaluation procedure. The file should be named as Rubric_2022_Name_FamilyNames.pdf.
  4. Students attending the evaluation day must upload to the Moovi server one slide of the poster presentation (just 1 page in landscape orientation) by 14:00 (CET) of June 6, 2022, Monday.
  5. The evaluation by the committees will take place during the poster sessions of the workshop (June 10, 2022, Friday).
  6. The evaluation committees will deliver the score by June 20, 2022, Monday. Those students who fail will be granted with a two-week period to correct the observed deficiencies.

Instructions for the preparation of the material

POSTER LAYOUT

  • Poster orientation should be portrait (vertical).
  • Poster size should be A0 (841 mm x 1189 mm).
  • The title should be ideally in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, 72 pt. font. Author, Thesis Advisor(s) and affiliation  should be in 42 pt. font
  • Use colour for highlighting and to make your poster attractive.
  • Use pictures, diagrams, figures, etc., rather than only text wherever possible.
  • Minimum font size for all text: 24 pt.

    • Results & Discussions (if available yet)

POSTER SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION

At the beginning of each Poster session, the students will have the opportunity to show 1 (ONE) slide in landscape orientation MAXIMUM to focus attention on the topic of their poster.  Please note that this slide is not meant to cover the whole research, BUT ONLY HIGHLIGHT THE MAJOR GOALS OF THE THESIS WORK.

This slide (in a pdf file) must be uploaded to the Moovi server.
